How to Make Butternut Squash Baby Food

I'm so excited that Fall is FINALLY here. Don't get me wrong, as a teacher, I absolutely love summertime, but once school starts back I'm ready for some cooler weather, autumn leaves, and warm your soul and belly foods. My husband has a strict no chili or soup rule during warm weather months, so I always look forward to breaking out these recipes when the cooler weather sets in.

I've been on a mission to make my own baby food and I thought it only right that my little man should have some fall-themed food as well. Butternut Squash is one of my favorite Fall veggies, so I thought it would be the perfect entree for Baby B. The vibrant color will remind you of the changing leaves and satisfy your little one's tummy.

As always please consult your child's physician before making this recipe. Here's the step-by-step on making your own Butternut Squash Baby Food:

Ingredients:

  • 1 Butternut Squash
  • 5 oz. Breast Milk or Formula (more or less depending on desired consistency)
  • 1 tsp. Cinnamon (optional)



Step 1

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Place your Butternut Squash onto a plate and microwave for 2 minutes. I don't know if you've ever tried to cut into a Winter Squash, but the outer shell can be quite hard and it can be a full workout just trying to cut the squash in half. Microwaving the squash first will make this task so much easier.



Step 2

After you have microwaved the squash, cut it in half and scoop out the seeds. 





Step 3

Fill a cooking dish with 1 to 2 inches of water and place squash face down in the water. Bake squash on 400 for 40 minutes.


Step 4

Allow squash to cool. Once cooled scoop out squash and place in blender. Add desired quantity of breast milk or formula. I added 5 oz. of breast milk to mine to give it a thicker texture, but you can add more or less based on what your baby likes. You can also add cinnamon (about 1 tsp.) to the mixture at the time if you have already introduced the spice to your child. If you haven't it's best to wait and introduce the squash, allow a few days to make sure baby isn't allergic and then add cinnamon separately to introduce later.


Step 5

Puree until smooth. Pour mixture into ice cube trays. Mine filled up 2 trays and some other small containers. Actual quantity will depend on the size of your Butternut Squash and quantity of liquid added.


Step 6

Place trays/containers into the freezer and freeze over night or at least 3 hours. Remove cubes from tray and place in freezer safe container or bag. 


My cubes didn't end up too pretty because I made my puree so thick, but I feel confident it won't affect the taste!

It contains a good amount of nutrition, protein, vitamins, and minerals.
